It’s time to “Unleash the Canberra Beast in the East…!!!”

Returning to the court for 2022 with an away game against Norths Bears on Sunday 3 April @12pm, the Nationals will be full of confidence for the upcoming season as they look to build on a 2021 season where they only lost 2 games.

With new captain Kris Langhorn and the dynamic Lizzie Tonks leading from the front, Canberra boasts a strong side that features a mixture of exciting local players and proven top-tier pros. The addition of Abby Solway, a development player from the UC Capitals, and Bianca Dufelmeier, an ex-WNBL gun, signals to the rest of the league that this team means business.

Regaining the momentum they built last season is key for the National’s title aspirations in the Coles Express NBL1 East debut season. Having won 6 games in a row (by an average of over 30 points) before the season was shut down, demonstrated that the Nationals team can score heavily and bringing that ability to the NBL 1 East will be an important part of the National’s plan for the upcoming season.

Key games for your diary include:

Round 1 vs Norths Bears – a season opener against the Bears away from home is tough way to get the season started, and coming up against one of the most talented sides makes it even tougher. With a pair of last year’s All Stars in Kate Seebohm and Emily Simons in the bears ranks, the Nationals will have to make sure they are ready to go right from the start.

Round 6 vs Albury-Wodonga Bandits – a home court clash against the Bandits will be a blockbuster occasion, with Australia’s greatest ever female basketballer, Lauren Jackson, coming to town. Playing for her home team, Jackson joins a Bandits squad full of young talent that will be eager to impress their illustrious team-mate. The Nationals will have to figure out a plan to limit Jackson’s impact, something few have been able to do.

With championship aspirations and a winning mentality, the Canberra Nationals are ready and raring to go as they put the finishing touches on their preparations for the very first season of NBL1 East.
