By BACT Media Unit – 20 November 2023

A familiar face to our Basketball ACT family was honoured with a place on the University of Canberra (UC) Sport Walk of Fame in recognition of their long-term involvement and success in basketball, as well as their academic achievement on Friday 17 November 2023.

In a long and storied career career, Phil Brown has been known for many things, to many different generations in the nation’s capital – a member of the Canberrra Cannons; a long-term coach of the AIS Women’s program; a WNBL winning coach; until recently the Head of High Performance and Coaching at Basketball ACT; school holiday camp coach and now Phil can now add UC Sport Walk of Fame inductee, after a luncheon presentation on Friday 17 November 2024, at the UC Sports Hall.

Phil joined Jaime Fernandez OLY (Rowing), Kate Roffey AM (Admin), Mark Levy OAM (Swimming) as 2023 Inductees, after the UC Sport Walk of Fame launched in 2022.

“I greatly appreciate the recognition by UC to be inducted into the UC Walk of Fame and I am honoured to be with other recognised alumni that have received their degrees through UC academic programs and have made significant contributions to their respective sports as athletes, coaches or administrators.”

“Starting my coaching career as a nineteen-year old in Canberra coaching junior boys and girls, senior men and women at the club and ACT representative level in addition to being an assistant coach to the Canberra Cannons NBL Team whilst also working and studying towards my Bachelor of Applied Science in Coaching degree at UC provided an apprenticeship of sorts which formed the foundation for my professional coaching career”.

“I feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to coach incredible athletes and people in my coaching roles as Head Coach of the AIS Womens’ Program for 20 years and with the National Team Program with the Australian U19 Gems and Opals teams for many years.  The UC degree provided the formal academic qualification in addition to undertaking other formal basketball coaching qualifications through Basketball Australia Coach Accreditation Program whilst considerable practical coaching experience over the past 40 years further developed my basketball knowledge, coaching style and teaching capabilities”.

Congratulations and well deserved.

The University of Canberra Sports Walk of Fame is located along the foot-bridge that connects the UC Refectory and the UC Sports precinct.
