The 2022/23 Summer Open is officially over. On Thursday 8 December, Basketball ACT hosted the men’s and women’s Senior Summer Open grand finals at the Belconnen Basketball Stadium.

The tournament saw seven women’s teams and nine men’s teams competing for eight regular season rounds leading up to the finals. The men’s championship was contested by the Wests and Vikings, while the women’s grand final had the Norths and Dodgers face off for the gold.

Men’s Summer Open Grand Final

At the end of the men’s regular season, the Wests led the ladder undefeated with an 8-0 record, earning them a spot in the grand final against the second team — the Tuggeranong Vikings (6-2).

The game was a thriller, with the Wests’ Isaac Plunkett scoring 27 points and Dylan Giles dropping 25 points for the Vikings. Both teams were neck-at-neck, but in the end, the Vikings put an end to the Wests’ winning streak. Final score: Vikings 77, Wests 75.

Women’s Summer Open Grand Final

The women’s grand final tipped off shortly after the men’s champions received their awards. The Norths and Dodgers both secured their spots in the grand final through massive semi-final victories the prior week. When they finally went up against each other, they did not disappoint.

Kate Anderson led the scoreboard with 18 points for the Norths and Karen Hill scored 13 for the Dodgers. While both teams played ruthlessly, the Dodgers secured the victory by 2 points in the end. Final score: Dodgers 51, Norths 49.
