2015 Under 14 Club Championships Daily Recaps
Day 1 – Monday 28 September 2015
Day 1 of the 2015 Under 14 Australian Club Championships started well for Canberra teams, with both the Boys and Girls teams registering wins in their first games.
The Canberra Capitals Girls side got off to a solid start against the Gosford City Rebels, winning 63-33. Kassidy Fox had 20 points for the Capitals, to go along with 14 points from Caitlin Quester.
The Capitals had a mixed day for results however, going down to the Bulleen Boomers 81-40. Kassidy Fox again top scored, with 14 against Bulleen.
The Girls play today at 1:30pm. Fixtures and Results can be found by clicking here.
The Canberra Gunners Boys team got off to a great start with a hard fought 53-49 win over Western Australian powerhouse Willetton Tigers.
Willetton started the game strongly and got out to a 5 point lead at the end of the first quarter. The Canberra boys did not let his get to them and fought hard in the second quarter to claw back the deficit to tie the game up at half time.
Canberra came out firing after the half time break and jumped out to an early 6 point lead at the start of the third quarter on the back of consecutive 3 pointers from #7 Blake Jones.
Willetton were not going to be denied and applied continual pressure to cut into Canberra’s lead, hitting the front in the last minutes of the game. Despite the pressure from Willetton, Canberra maintained their composure, regained the lead and managed to hang on for the close win.
Blake Jones and Harry Matthew top scored for the Gunners, with 17 and 12 points respectively.
The Boys play again today at 10:30am against the Central Districts Lions. Fixtures and Results can be found by clicking here.
Day 2 – Tuesday 29 September 2015
Day 2 in Perth saw the Gunners team come up against some red hot opposition in the Central District Lions and Sydney Comets. After a great start on day 1 they struggled against these two well drilled sides going down to the Lions 57-32 in the morning with Harry Matthew scoring 13 and Blake Jones 7.
Later in the afternoon they faced the Comets in a must win match to progress into the top 12. Unfortunately they could not match the speed of the Comets and find their winning form from day 1, going down 75-47. Blake Jones scored 19 while Harry Matthew continued his form scoring 15, while being supported by solid contributions from all team members.
Wednesday sees the start of the crossover games with the Gunners finishing third in their pool games, drawn to play Cockburn Cougars (WA) on Wednesday afternoon and Sunshine Coast Rip (QLD) on Thursday morning. The Gunners will now be competing in the Shield division. Fixtures and Results for the boys can be found by clicking this link.
It was a different story for the Canberra Capitals side in Gosford, with the girls side defeating the Rockingham Flames 46-28. Kassidy Fox continued her scoring form, putting up 12 points, while Natasha Lyall scored 10.
The Capitals finished 2nd in their pool, and will play the Diamond Valley Eagles on Wednesday, and the Knox Raiders on Thursday in their crossover games in the Championship division. Fixtures and Results for the girls can be found by clicking here.
