ACT U16 Women’s State Team Announced

The Under-16 Women’s state squad is selected and ready to take the court on the Sunshine Coast this July at the National Championships!

Considered the pinnacle event of Australian junior basketball, U16 Nationals provides a stage for players to take to the court and excel in front of Australian selectors.

Head Coach Shane Wallace says that this years group is well prepared and are looking to be more competitive in the earlier stages of the tournament.

“As a group we have a wide variety of skills that complement each others game really well,” says Wallace, “each player understands their role and is willing to play their part and as a team we look to use our ability to combine poise and execution with an attacking mindset,” he adds. “We also look to bring a level of resilience and aim to play a real team game as we understand that whatever outcome we reach is achieved together.”

Wallace says the team will sit down before Nationals and set out their goals and expectations for the tournament. As a team, they’ll be looking to work hard and consistently play their own game in order to surpass expectations.

“Nationals provides us with the opportunity to compete and test ourselves against the best athletes and teams in the Country,” he says. “Given that this years tournament is being held on the Sunshine Coast it has the added benefit of giving us somewhere warm to escape to during Canberra’s Winter!”

The squad of 12 is made up of:

Abby Solway (Queanbeyan)
Alexandra Gorddard (CGGS)
Elise Finney (CGGS)
Emily Nguyen (Radford)
Erica Cooper (Ginninderra Rats)
Hayley Macdonald (Norths)
Keeley Dunbar (Norths)
Kirby Smee (Norths)
Lara Essex (Tuggeranong Southern Cross)
Mia Slater (Wests)

Madelyn McLachlan (Tuggeranong Southern Cross)

“The Australian Junior Championship is the pinnacle tournament for each age group,” says Wallace. “I think that the selected athletes and their families should be really proud of their improvements and achievements throughout the year which has culminated in their ability to now test themselves against the best athletes, in their age group, in the country. What an exciting time for a young athlete!”
