Old Rivals, New Stakes: Gunners Host Maitland in Finals Showdown
NBL1 East Finals action returns to the Nation’s Capital as the Canberra Gunners welcome the Maitland Mustangs to the Southern Cross Stadium in Tuggeranong for a high-stakes Elimination final.
This is not the first time that both sides have faced off in the post-season, having met in three of the last four finals series, with Grand Finals in 2022 and 2024, and a Semi-Final in 2023.
Having travelled to Maitland in Round 3 earlier this season, the Gunners are fully aware of the challenge ahead of them.
“Any team is a challenge, but Maitland and us have had some really good battles over the last few years, so it’s fitting that we’ll have one in an Elimination Final”, said Head Coach Peter Herak.
“They’ve been a very tough team this season, they’ve brought in some highly talented players, Reyne Smith is an excellent shooter and an NBL player. It’s been tough to scout for and prepare for. The boys know that it’s going to be an absolute battle. They’re going to bring it and we’re going to have to do the same.”
Averaging 18.44 PTS, 3.5 AST, and 8.72 REB for the season, star forward Will Mayfield is excited to face the Mustangs in finals yet again, saying that both sides enjoy the battle and that he is excited to have them make the trip down.
“I think it’s happened since season one, just a deep rivalry that all the players really enjoy. We stick with the core guys on both teams, a couple of proud organisations that really enjoy the battle every time. I’m excited to have them down here, thankfully we aren’t going up there,” said Mayfield.
With one of the strongest fanbases in the competition packing out the Southern Cross Stadium on a regular basis, the team is hoping for another big turnout this weekend.
“We love our fans and we love playing in front of them. When they’re up and about, we’re up and about as well. We know that they’re going to give us a boost as well for sure.” said Herak.
Mayfield echoed the love for fanbase, saying that the Gunners have been lucky to be backed by a such a strong and consistent group of supporters.
“We’ve been lucky all year, been lucky the last four years, with such a great fanbase. I’m sure they’re going to turn up and be loud. I love it when they are there. I’m excited to play in front of them.”
