Norths Basketball Club have claimed a Senior Premier League 1 double, taking out both the Men’s and Women’s 2026 titles.

It was a historic night for the club as their men’s team took out a third straight championship, while their Women’s team have now gone four in a row.

Belconnen Basketball Stadium was packed full of spectators to witness the SPL1 Men’s Grand Final, with Norths taking on the Ginninderra Rats. 

Norths secured the win 83 – 68 after coming back from an 11-point deficit at half time. This comeback was fuelled by a dominant defensive performance by Norths in the back half of the game, out-scoring the Rats 28 – 12 in the 4th quarter alone.

The Ginninderra Rats started strong, playing their typical fast and aggressive style to try and build an early lead. But with this style of play came fouls and turnovers which hampered their momentum, yet they maintained confidence and worked hard to disrupt the Norths more planned approach. 

Comparatively, North’s more measured strategy saw them approach the game with consistency through all four quarters, although they did start off the game sluggishly and struggled to get shots to drop.

North’s Guard Mitchell Robinson was the game’s top scorer with 23 points. He found his groove in the 4th, hitting back-to-back three-point shots which practically secured the win. When asked if he was given the green light to fire away, he said “The light was never red, if you shoot enough of them one will go in eventually, but I just happened to hit a couple at the end when it counted”. 

A dominant performance from the Norths Women’s team saw them take out a fourth straight championships and establish a dynasty, in front of a packed stadium.

Norths settled themselves with some slick ball movement to find Ava Tawake for 7 points in two minutes, while locking down the Roadrunners on the defensive end. The second quarter looked like a 3-point contest. Every time Queanbeyan cut the lead from deep, Norths’ Tilly Bean and Maya Hart answered with long makes of their own.

After half-time, Norths showcased their experience in elimination games, out-rebounding, out-scoring, and taking much better care of the ball than their opponents. Queanbeyan showed a faint pulse early in the fourth quarter on fastbreaks and a string of physical Kristen Langhorn drives, but it was much too little, much too late.

Norths refused to let up, stretching the final score to 89-49 at the final buzzer. 

It was a milestone performance for Tyler Scheid, winning the Grand Final Most Valuable Player award behind a game-leading 19 points.

“I’ve always kind of been a role player—get rebounds, get assists, so that was a bit different for me,” she said, reflecting on the individual accolade.

In the SPL2 Grand Finals, Queanbeyan Roadrunners prevailed in the Men’s Grand Final, winning by six points in a thriller against Gungahlin Flames, while Warriors Basketball Club proved too strong for Canberra City Stallions in the Women’s, running out 36 point winners with a final score of 76-40.
