Basketball ACT is pleased to confirm that Peter Herak has re-signed for the next two seasons as Head Coach of the Canberra Gunners NBL1 East team.

Returning to the helm of the team that he has been in charge of since the beginning of the NBL1 East competition in 2022, Herak has enjoyed plenty of success in the role, with two NBL1 East Championships along with one NBL1 National Finals trophy. 

“We’re a group that’s been together for a long time, and even though we’ve enjoyed some success along the way, there’s still a feeling within the group that there’s more to achieve,” said Herak.

After a long season full of ups and downs, the team will now reset ahead of the 2027 campaign, looking to improve on their end to 2026.

“It was disappointing to end the NBL1 East season like we did, but a win at the National Finals when everyone had forgotten about us gave us a reminder of our ability as a team.

“We’ll reset for 2027, make a few tweaks like we always do, and be ready for the challenge of a new season. I can’t wait to get into it.”

Having coached the likes of Glenn Morison, James Toohey, and Will Mayfield since they were teenagers, Herak has been lucky to benefit off the success of the local junior pathway, wanting local players to be able to see the Gunners as a crucial step in their basketball journey.

“I want to make sure the ACT pathways remain strong. So many of our group came through the junior and representative pathways, and the Gunners have benefitted from that in recent years.

“It’s important that our best young talent see the Gunners as a step on their basketball journey. Canberra Basketball has always been built on local talent like this current group, and I’m excited by the young talent coming through the Basketball ACT system.”
