Under 18 Women’s State Team Announcement

The Under-18 Women’s state squad is selected and ready to take the court in Townsville this April at the National Championships!

Considered the blue ribbon event of Australian junior basketball, U18 Nationals provides a stage for players who have taken the court together since juniors to excel in front of Australian selectors and US college scouts.

“Our group has a nice blend of back court and perimeter speed with strength on the interior,” said Head Coach Jenny Lonergan. “We showed signs at the East Coast Challenge that we can be disruptive defensively and play unselfishly at the offensive end.”

“We have three athletes returning from last year in Pyper Thornberry, Natasha Lyall and Maddie Wheatley and their leadership will be important for us,” said Lonergan. “All three have been terrific leaders in the early part of our preparation and it will be exciting to see how the promising bottom age players perform.”

Lonergan says that while her players will discuss and set their goals and expectations for the tournament closer to Nationals, from her perspective she wants the team to commit to their style of play and compete as hard as they can in every game.

“The players are excited about the challenge of competing on the national stage at the 2019 Australian Junior Championships and we are confident of representing Basketball ACT well in Townsville,” said Lonergan. “Our goal is to ensure we qualify for the quarter finals and it is a whole new tournament from that point.”
