ACT U18 Men’s State Team Announced

The Under-18 Men’s state squad is selected and ready to take the court in Geelong this April at the National Championships!

Considered the blue ribbon event of Australian junior basketball, U18 Nationals provides a stage for players who have taken the court together all the way through juniors to excel in front of Australian selectors and US college scouts.

“We have some real length, athleticism and depth in our guards and wings this year,” says Head Coach, Ben White. “Offensively, we will aim to be well organised, take care of the ball and get our athletes attacking the rim,” he adds. “Defensively we will try to use our speed and length to be disruptive and force turnovers.”

White says that while his players will discuss and set their goals and expectations for the tournament closer to Nationals, from his perspective he wants the team to commit to their style of play and compete as hard as they can in every game.

“I view the Under 18 National Basketball Championships as the pinnacle event for HP athletes in Australia,” he says. “From a coaching perspective, it’s a lot of fun to work with athletes who have had multiple years of experience and development in BACT HP programs and competing on that national stage against the bigger states is a challenge the group is very excited about.”

The squad of 12 is made up of:

Alex Archer (Wests)
Dhal Fieg (Wests)
James Gorddard (Grammar)
Ethan Jetter (Rats)
Harry Matthew (Norths/WCWD)
Zac McDermott (Daramalan)
Gabriel Selino (Wests)
Kade Tomsic (Queanbeyan/WCWD)
Henry Wallace (Radford)
Angus Williams (Marist)

JJ Jalloh (Rats)
Joe MacDonald (Wests)
Ben Mitchell (Rats)

“As coaches, we love that our group is fit, hard working and have developed a tight-knit and supportive culture within the program,” says White. “It’s a cliche, but we are more focused on getting our processes right and trusting that the results will follow from that than we are about final placings.”

Congratulations to everyone involved and all the best in your preparation for April!
