ACT U16 Men’s State Team Announced

The Under-16 Men’s state squad is selected and ready to take the court on the Sunshine Coast this July at the 2018 National Championships!

Considered the pinnacle event of Australian junior basketball, U16 Nationals provides a stage for players to take to the court and excel in front of Australian selectors.

“This year’s team has a great mixture of height, athleticism and maturity,” says Head Coach Dai Harrison. “We are lucky to have some Nationals experience in the team with a few players backing up from last year’s tournament, which will provide strong leadership support for those other team members having their first Nationals experience.”

Harrison says the team will sit down before Nationals and set out their goals and expectations for the tournament. As a team, they’ll be looking to remain competitive and control the tempo of games to best utilise their strengths for the duration for the tournament.

“Nationals gives the players the best opportunity to measure where they are at both as a team, and as individual athletes against the best players in the country” he says. “The perspective gained from experiencing different styles of play and games played at high intensity will be invaluable for all these young men – particularly as they look to progress their basketball through future ACT representative programs and to aspire to higher opportunities.”

The squad of 12 is made up of:

Airi Wolff (Ginninderra Rats)
Alex Toohey (Marist)
Andrew Do (Radford)
Angus Wen (Wests)
Charlie Potter (Wests)
Curtis Patterson (Wests)
Dan Busing (Marist)
Jake Saunders (Marist)
Jarrod Barker (Norths)
Lachie Fitzpatrick (Queanbeyan)

Cameron Pender (Wests)
Lachie Kendrick (Marist)

“We will be looking for the team to be consistent and resilient throughout the week,” Harrison adds. “All team members will be challenged to recover quickly from the highs and lows that each game will bring – and the coaches will want the players to re-focus quickly on the next game.”

Basketball ACT would like to congratulate everyone involved and wish them all the best for their preparations for July.
