on the move

Basketball ACT are proud to have built Australia’s first FIBA accredited 3X3 basketball courts!

3X3 basketball is a high octane version of the 5-on-5 indoor game. In a single period of 10 minutes, or first to 21 points, shots inside the arc are worth one point, while every basket from behind the arc is awarded two.

The usual 24-second shot clock is dropped to 12-seconds, so shots are aplenty, and no seconds can be wasted.

3X3 stems from street ball, a half court, recreational form of basketball. The game is played with one hoop, meaning after the defensive team gains possession they must “clear” the ball back out past the three-point line before scoring.

In FIBA (basketball’s international body) 3X3, a size 6 basketball is used for all divisions, both women and men, and teams consist of three players with one substitute.

At Belconnen Basketball Stadium, two full-size outdoor basketball courts have been built, creating four 3X3 designated half courts in the capital.

The venue includes night time lighting, spectator seating, and a warm-up and practice area. The royal blue and yellow ‘Plexicushion’ playing surface is FIBA standard, while the venue is surrounded by security fencing, and is disability accessible.

On June 9th, 2017, Deputy Chief Minister, Yvette Berry, officially opened the courts alongside Basketball Australia CEO, Anthony Moore, and Basketball ACT President, David Leaney.

Both social and wheelchair competitions are now held regularly.
