2019 Under 18 Men’s State Team Announcement

The Under-18 Men’s state squad is selected and ready to take the court in Townsville this April at the National Championships!

Considered the blue ribbon event of Australian junior basketball, U18 Nationals provides a stage for players who have taken the court together since juniors to excel in front of Australian selectors and US college scouts.

“We’re very happy with the teams preparation over the past 4-5 months and we’re excited about the group we’ve selected,” said Head Coach Ben White. “We believe we have some good length, athleticism and depth for an ACT team and we’re pleased with the balance of the team as well.”

“We welcome back Harry Matthew and Henry Wallace who both played in last years Under 18 Nationals team and we’re thrilled to select Daniel Busing, Airi Wolff and Charlie Potter as bottom age players who represented ACT in last years Under 16 Nationals team,” White added.

White says that while his players will discuss and set their goals and expectations for the tournament closer to Nationals, from his perspective he wants the team to commit to their style of play and compete as hard as they can in every game.

“Last year the boys were able to achieve our goal of making the top 8 earning them a quarter final against Tasmania,” White said. “Our goal is to make the top 8 again and give ourselves another chance at a quarter final victory.”

The squad of 12 is made up of:

Robbie Emelifeonwu – Ginninderra Rats
Henry Wallace – Radford College
Sam Bates – Tuggeranong Vikings
Dan Busing – Marist College
Harry Matthew – Norths
Charlie Mellick – Ginninderra Rats
Amath Fall – Norths
Charlie Potter – Wests
Luke Murphy – Ginninderra Rats
Airi Wolff – Ginninderra Rats

Head Coach: Ben White
Assistant Coach: Jarryd Heywood
Manager: Jackie Mellick
Physiotherapist: Toby Conroy

“We’re very fortunate that 7 of the 10 selected athletes participated in the NPP USA Tour last December,” he added. “Not only was it a great learning experience for our athletes but it gave the group a chance to develop chemistry, implement our structure and instil our style-of-play. This tour has been a huge benefit to our program.”

Congratulations to everyone involved and all the best in your preparation for April!
